Minding Our Business

Minding Our Business (MOB) is a community-based research project that focuses on addressing the mental health needs of youth in Eastern North Carolina. Examining social and environmental determinants of mental health is a critical component of the research. As such, we are focusing specifically on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and racism/racial injustice on the mental health of youth. MOB utilizes an intergenerational and multi-disciplinary approach, that can inform the development of community-based mental health promotion outreach products.

MOB's most recent research project:

An Intergenerational Qualitative Exploration of Adolescent Mental Health Among Rural African Americans

Project Momentum's director, Mysha Wynn, recently collaborated with Dionne Smith Coker-Appiah and Heidi Bonner in conducting a research project focused on mental health in the rural African American community. The study hopes to "facilitate change by partnering with rural communities in an effort to address mental health issues by increasing knowledge, challenging stigmas, and overcoming barriers to help-seeking."

Additional Community Support Opportunities:

Our Mental Health Matters: A Healing Circle Intervention

Project Momentum is partnering with other agencies in the community to host Healing Circles!

Healing Circles provide a safe space to discuss important issues that have impacted our lives. During the Healing Circle, you will discuss issues important to you and your community, learn about resilience, and learn skills that you can use to cope with stressors.

Valiant Families Youth Mental Health Counseling

Youth balance a lot of things. They have academics, family responsibilities, social dynamics, and so many other things to navigate. It is great when they are able to express themselves and gain insight into how to best handle it all.

Sometimes it is easier for students and families to connect with people they do not see on a regular basis. Valiant Families is a community agency that is partnering with Project Momentum and other community agencies to offer free counseling for youth!
